“My name is Aanchal Anand - also known as Anya to my Russian friends. Taken near Murmansk’s Alyosha monument, which commemorates the Second World War, this is a picture of me touching the plaque remembering the valor and sacrifice of Hero City Leningrad. But why did I choose Leningrad and not one of the other 11 Hero Cities, including Murmask? Because St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) was the first Russian city I ever read about and wanted to visit, even as a child. Later, it became my first home in Russia, and it was where I learned the Russian language and got acquainted with Russian culture for the first time. It was the city that gave life to my Russian dream!” (Photo by Aanchal Anand)
